The class of 2013 graduates on May 22 at Legend High School; teacher Debbie Tawzer and assistant principal, Mari Farley at the head and 50 junior escorts as their right hand girls and guys, it’s bound to be a good one.
There are a total of six scheduled rehearsals; but only one with teachers, and only one with seniors.
“[At graduation] they help students and staff line up, as well as little things,” Tawzer said. “If a senior needs some bobby pins, their junior escort is the [first person] to go to.”
Generally, the top 50 kids in their class, GPA wise are invited to be junior escorts for graduation.
“[This year] it wasn’t the first 50 kids we came to,” Tawzer said. “Some kids don’t want to [or can’t] make that commitment.”
With just under a month to graduation, rehearsals have begun. The escorts were fitted for the white robes they will be wearing for the ceremony, and roughly walked through how they will lead lines during the ceremony. Wednesday May 1 is their next rehearsal, in which they will have a formal chance to walk through how the graduation ceremony will go.
“It’s an honor to be a part of the process. [They’re] really invaluable to what we do,” Tawzer said. “Without them we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”
