Vanessa Campuzano, a junior, envisioned a club that would branch out to better an unnoticed issue. That’s where Help for the Homeless Club comes in. She started the club during her sophomore year with Kendra Schurich as the faculty adviser. The club, totaling to twelve people, meets once every month to discuss new ideas to participate in.

The main reason why Campuzano created this club was because she loves “to help others and do what [she] does best: community service.”

For this school year, Campuzano brainstormed multiple ideas to help this cause and carry the message to more people at Legend.

“We’re focusing more on doing community service, but also more fundraisers. A canned food drive would be the most obvious and common thing, so we’re trying to do things Student Government wouldn’t do,” said Campuzano.

To this founder, the club is “not your typical thing” you would see at every school. She decided to focus more on the homeless because people underestimate how big of a problem it is.  Homeless people are dying because they lack the basic needs we have, and people in Parker underestimate this.

“I don’t care that the club isn’t as huge as NHS (National Honor Society). It doesn’t take a lot of people to do good things in our community,” Campuzano said.

This year, the club is planning on doing a coat drive at school and donating those to a major homeless organization for the holidays. Since it’s difficult to donate coats, the math department is teaming up and handing out extra credit for those who bring one. The plan is still being put into action, since the idea just recently got approved.
