This past weekend, Legend’s DECA team competed in the State competition at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. The team had been practicing and preparing for this all year and the time had finally come for them to compete.

DECA is made up of students who compete in both team events as well as individual events, some are written while others are played out in hypothetical situations. One team in particular made it to the state finals.

Junior Auggie Mustillo and his team, which consisted of juniors Patrick Forsyth and Alex Stone and seniors Jonah Landy and Chandler Campbell, qualified for the state finals and ended up placing in the top 14 for Sports and Entertainment Marketing. Landy also qualified for state for Automotive Services and made it to the finals for his written Entrepreneurship.

The team will continue to train for next year’s national competition, which is “next May in Georgia; it’s our ultimate goal,” Mustillo said. For this year, however, they don’t have any more competitions but are looking forward to next year.

The state competition, held Feb. 23-25, “went really well! It was so exciting to get to stay at the Broadmoor, and I had an amazing time with all of my friends on the DECA team,” according to Mustillo.

Every year is different for the DECA team and Legend’s program continues to grow and more students are getting to experience it. “I think it helped develop multiple skills and is something I’d do again,” Landy said.

DECA is in its first year at Legend and is advised by business teacher Tori Becker.
