Titanfall was released for preview at E3 last year, and was a huge success, winning over 60 awards and becoming one of the most anticipated game of 2014. It’s a new EA online multi-player first-person shooter game, set to be released March 11, available for PC and Xbox One.

EA allowed for online players to register for beta testing starting on Feb. 14, and ended Feb. 20. Those that tried to get into testing were not required to preorder the game. Those that got access to the beta were released a version of the game that had a tutorial for piloting your titan, and three game modes: Last Titan Standing, Attrition (Team Deathmatch), Hardpoint Domination.

The premise of the game is that you are a pilot of a large, humanistic machine called a titan, which acts as an extension of your body to fight in, with superior fire power and speed. Titans are extremely difficult to destroy, even when supplied weapons that can take down a titan.

First off, the graphics of the game are beautiful. Each landscape has small details put into the design, and different levels in buildings that make fighting players and AIs more entertaining.

However, first time playing, there are way too many controls on PC gameplay to remember. Besides the normal mouse and WASD controls, you also have Q, C, E, F, Shift, Space, and V all with functions, and sometimes one button does two different things based on whether or not you are in your titan. I barely survived my first practice titan wave, facing two titans in my own titan. I did not survive the second wave.

Third, the amount of thought that went into the design of the game is superb. There are little touches here and there (a flicker of the holographic screen, your titan helping you into it, etc) that make it fantastic.

Overall, there’s a reason why Titanfall won so many awards at the E3 release. It’s gorgeous, fun, fast-paced, and a great innovation in first person shooters. Once mastered, Titanfall will no doubt be the most recommended game of 2014.
